Ace Hotel Downtown LA
Ace Hotel Downtown LA
Ace Hotel Downtown LA Los Angeles, California, 2014 Architectural renovation and interior design of the historic United Artists theatre and adjacent Texaco office tower, commissioned by Mary Pickford and built in 1927. The project includes a
hotel with 180 guestrooms, restaurant, bar, event spaces, rooftop pool and lounge, as well as a 1600 seat theatre. The goal was to create a hotel by LA for LA, a local experience through and through. We took inspiration from the mash up of Spanish Colonial and Gothic styles found in the existing architecture and in 1920’s Los Angeles, and created a narrative that involved the hedonism of the flapper era, mixed with the emerging modernist movement and an added dose of energy from the LA punk movement. We enlisted the help of 16 local artists, artisans and craftsmen to create commissioned artwork and furnishings for the project and had virtually everything in the hotel manufactured in the state of California and by extension…Mexico.
The resulting spaces are eclectic, layered, and feel as if they’ve always been there. Awards: - LABC 44th Annual Los Angeles Architectural Awards, Hospitality Category, 2014 - LA Conservancy Preservation Award, 2014 - Wallpaper Magazine Best Urban Hotel Awards 2014: Runner Up.
